Hanjra

Hanjra is the tribe of Jutt & Rajput status. Mostly Hanjras in Punjab considered themselves Jutts but some are Rajputs  whereas in Pothohar Hanjra considered themselves Rajputs. Hanjra in Punjab use titles of ChaudaryMalik, Sardar and Mian depending upon residing area of one's living while  Hanjra in Pothohar use title of Raja like other Rajput tribes of Pothohar.

Hanjra also has small presence in Sindh and Balochistan provinces.

Dr.Lal Bux Naich (from Mirpur Mathelo, Sindh) who has written extensively on the Tribes of Punjab & Sindh gives the following geneology:

Mool raj → Chalak Raj (Suraj Bansi) → Sutrak Raj (Taxila Sarkup university Founder)→Saroya →Hanjra

Hanjra word is written differently in different areas like Hinjra, Hunjra, Hanjrah, Hinjrai, Hinjraon, Hajira, Hanjirah, Hanjraw, Hajra, Hinjral, Hanjral, Hanj etc.

Religion

Hanjra tribe accepted Islam in between 1550-1575 A.D. at the hands of Hazrat Daud Bandagi Kirmani (R.A), a Sufi Saint of Qadri Order.

Hanjra living in Pakistani Punjab are Muslims while Hanjra in India are Sikhs and Hindus.

History

Mr. Morris writes that centuries ago they peopled more than half the Hafizabad District.
Hanjra is one of the aboriginal tribes of Gujranwala district ; they claim Solar (Suraj bansi Rajput) descent from one Hanjra, whose son "Lakat" 25 generations ago came from Hindustan, and settling in this district founded a city called Uskhab, the ruins of which near Kolo Tarar still exist ; he married the daughter of one Ruchand, with whom he lived for some years. Subsequently he returned to his native country in Hindustan, leaving his wife and his son "Mal" a growing youth, behind him. "Mal," on arriving at years of discretion, set out in search of his father, and found him ; at the same time discovering several new relations, in the sons of his father by a second marriage, did not agree, so the former returned to his mother in this district and founded a Village called "Mandiala Malanwala," the ruins of which are close to Dohattah Azmat. Presently a brother named "Dholarrived from Hindustan ; he was heartily welcomed by Mal, who gave him land ; and from these two brothers this tribe has spread till they occupy 37 villages and a large area of country. There are 9 sub divisions, named after Mal and his 8 half brothers. Seven of these are located in the Dehli Division, and two in this district. The tribe intermarry With all other sub-communities. Being principally Musalman, the custom of pagri-vand obtains. Their leading man is Chaudri Bahadur of Jurian.

The Hanjra of the Gujranwala bar are a pastoral tribe, perhaps of aboriginal extraction. They own 37 villages in Gujranwala which is their home, but have spread both east and west under the hills. They claim to be Saroha Rajputs, and that their ancestor Hinjrano came from the neighbourhood of Hissar to Gujranwala and founded a city called Uskhab, the ruins of which still exist. Their immediate ancestors are Mal and Dhol, and they say that half their clans still live in the Hissar country. It would be interesting to know the names of these clan, and to examine the alleged connection between the two sections of the tribe. In the Hissar Settlement Report it is stated that " the Hinjraon pachada trace their origin to a Saroha Rajput ancestor called Hinjraon. They are all Muhammadans in this district though in other places Hindu Hinjraon Pachhadas are to be found".

Hanjras trace their origins to the Saroya Rajputs. The Saroi Nagar in Rajasthan was founded by the Saroya Rajputs. Saroi Nagar area was held by them. Their ancestor name was Hanjrao/Hinjrano. The Hanjrao along with their clan, left Hissar and settled in the Hafizabad pargana of Gujranwala district. He established a village called Uskhab , the ruins of which are still found. They had 37 villages in Gujranwala district. The two great Dhol and Mal of this tribe were very famous persons. The Hanjras were popularly known as Hinjraon Pachadhe in Hisar and Sirsa area. They became Muslims in large numbers. Beyond Sirsa, they also came to the Malwa region of the Punjab. Muktsar (City in East Punjab) once had Hanjra population and they were Landlords
Maharaja Ranjit Singh confiscated half of their land and gave it to the Bains and Bhandars clans of Muktsar. In the Hissar Settlement Report it is stated that " the Hinjraon pachada trace their origin to a Saroha Rajput ancestor called Hinjraon. The Hanjra Jats are in minority in the areas of Sirsa, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, Malerkotla, Amritsar and Gurdaspur. But are in majority in Western Punjab in the areas of Sialkot, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Muzaffargarh. The Hanjra Jats becomes largely Muslims in Shahpur and Montgomery (Sahiwal) district. As per the census of 1881, the number of Hanjras in the United Punjab was 25,265.
Hanjra Jats also live in the Sardul Garh area of Mansa. Now the number of Hanjras in Punjab is low. Hanjra Jats are very Brave and Warriors.

The Bar tract of Sheikhupura Tehsil appears to have been held in Mughal times by Hinjra and Jag Hindu Jats and most of the numerous ruins of what were once apparently flourishing settlements are identified with the days of their ascendancy. When the central authority became enfeebled at the beginning of the last century, these industrious but un warlike Hindu tribes fell a prey to the more vigorous Muslim tribes (Kharals and Bhattis) who speedily ejected them from all but a fraction of their villages.
